How can i find out carrier of my iphone (i have no SIM) (Possible Unlock? 4.01)?

'I bought an used almost new iphone which i was told was for "rogers" but when i put in SIM it reads "Unvalid SIM" in iTunes. I took it to the rogers store where the sales lady tested my SIM in her iphone and her SIM in my iphone hers didn't work in mine but mine worked in hers. Therefor they concluded my phone wasn't for rogers. Without knowing i updated the iphone to 4.01 so i don think i can unlock it which would be the ideal solution. So i decided i will sell it but first i have to find out which company it is for so i can provide a accurate ad unlike the one that i found and used to buy this phone. How can i find the carrier of my iphone without the sim? the serial numbers?
